What happened in IEM Beijing 2019
The Modern City of Beijing was a busy place as CS:GO fans streamed into its streets, as eight of the best teams in the world came to compete for the share of the $250,000 USD prize pool. Going into the tournament, fans, and everyone else, had a feeling that Astralis would win the tournament, given their previous results of the last 2 years. But due to the increased competitiveness of Counter-Strike, teams such as ENCE and Evil Geniuses would make Astralis’ run to capture the title more than difficult.
IEM Beijing starts
In the group stage, Astralis were the big dogs, in group A, as they booked their semifinal spot by winning their matches against ViCi and 100 Thieves. 100 Thieves landed in second place after beating ENCE, 2-0 in the group decider.
IEM Beijing Playoffs
In the playoffs, it was quite entertaining as 100 Thieves edged out Vitality, 2-1. The game seemed to go Vitality’s way from the start. However, they picked up pace in the pistol round in Nuke. And for some moment, both teams were very equal. On the third map, 100 Thieves came from behind to snatch a victory and book their first grand final spot.
The second semifinal match between Astralis and FaZe was quite an unforgettable one as Astralis thrashed their opponents 2-0. FaZe was only able to win two rounds during the whole B03 and was left in shambles after the game.
The Grand Final!
In the grand finale, 100 Thieves seemed to ignore the fact that Astralis had tons of momentum going into the match as they picked Vertigo as their map pick. Astralis took advantage and won 16- 14. On the other two maps, Nuke and Train, Astralis remained dominant and ultimately won their first trophy since the StarLadder Major.
gla1ve, who was a massive contributor to Astralis’ victory, won his first-ever MVP award after displaying great individual performances throughout the tournament by averaging a 1.5 rating.
